whats your change

Filed under: Life happenings — j Thompson @ 2:24 pm

I was recently asked if I was interested in writing a piece for a magazine. The content had to do with “change,” anything I wanted to write about. It was all fair game. It got me thinking about the different elements involved in change. Good change, bad change.

I, for the most part, feel that change is a good thing. A new look or gaining a different perspective can open up our sensors. My season guiding on Mt. Rainier recently ended, I welcomed this change eagerly. It seems one comment I’ve heard from clients over and over is they wish they could have some element of my lifestyle. Simply, some of us need some change.
I think of events in history as examples of good and bad change. This month is the 50th anniversary of the “Little Rock 9″ from Central High in Little Rock, Arkansas. The 9 high school students that, amongst high tension and debate, ended the segregation of black and white students. This good change was massive, it took an escort of 1,200 soldiers to get these 9 students to the school grounds.

Change is uncomfortable. We naturally push change away, preventing too many unknowing events to take place in our lives, which we can’t control. We try to control our surroundings, we want to create our own nest and when elements of change come in to disrupt us we begin to fear change.
Embrace it. See how change can add progression to your life, and maybe into others.

Go find some snow

Filed under: Life happenings — j Thompson @ 3:38 pm

I was recently walking down from camp Muir on MT Rainier, it was a busy sunday afternoon. There are a few small patches of snow left, randomly scattered throughout the meadows. A number of kids were so energetic to get on this snow. I enjoyed watching their untainted enthusiasm. They were sliding, throwing, drawing… anything in the snow, so excited just to be in the snow. These kids had only one thing on their mind, enjoy it and love it.

As I continued to walk down, I found myself pondering aspects of child hood that maybe i could use a little more of. Kids are so persistent, they can’t handle a no answer. They will find a way, they live in a world where “anything is possible - once we think of doing it.” They are curious. Continually asking questions, wondering why and how. This is the gateway into creativity. The power of wondering. They live limitless, they wonder until something happens that has captured there attention.
